Art Progress 1 Year Later (+advice for beginner artists)

February 12, 2018 By JONRS Leave a Comment

2018 EDIT: If you’re looking for advice as a beginner artist, do not read this article! This article has outdated information that I no longer believe in. I’ve updated my advice to beginner artists and you can read all about it here.  (I’m keeping this article up because I believed this shit at the time I wrote it and I hate when people don’t accept and respect the “wrong” viewpoints of their past selves. It also serves as a milestone for my progress, or something. There’s the ego putting it’s two cents in. 😛 )  -JONRS, 2018

I should have wrote this article months ago. I started studying art in October of 2016. I’m a couple months late :X. I started writing the outline for this article as a timeline of how I progressed with art over the past year. I instantly regretted trying to make an outline. Instead I’m just going to show you where I am.

Also let me make it clear that this article is intended for people who don’t have the means to go to art school or simply don’t want to. This article is for the strugglers that choose to teach themselves art.

If you’re going to art school or have a teacher, don’t read this. If you’re unsure, get a teacher or go to school. It’s a lot safer and you won’t go insane like self-taught people do. 😛

The self taught path is for those of us who have no choice or seek self-mastery.

Pencil Art Progress

So I started my art journey with Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. I did the first exercises in the book and first tried to draw a side profile of one of my Guild Wars 2 characters from memory. Not even close hahahah. The second picture is a self-portrait I did with a mirror. I look like god damn Jabba the Hutt, HAAHHAHAHA!

Then I started doing Fun With a Pencil and I started to draw my crappy little cartoons again just like when I was a kid!

Fast forward 1 year and here I am doing sketches of anatomically incorrect classy bitches!

So I hope I’ve illustrated how good you can get (if you’re extremely undisciplined like me). If you draw everyday you will be light years ahead of me in your first year. 😀

Digital Art Progress

I went from being frustrated with digital drawing and spending hours trying to get the damn lines right… (and just ended up tracing her head).

To this:

I sketched the pose from imagination, used a posing doll to make sure I got the perspective somewhat passable, and actually colored the picture. My light and shadow knowledge is still pretty much non-existent but I still tried.

(If you want to see more of the progress you could make, check out my gallery! I’m going to upload most of my sketches and practice drawings over time.)

Decent progress for an undisciplined lazy fucker. If you are even slightly more motivated then me, you will make huge strides within your first year. Here’s the part where I tell you how to do better than I did my first year in art.

If I were to go back in time 1 year and tell myself how to study art correctly, here’s what I would say:

  • Study 1 subject for 2 weeks straight – Choose a topic of study and study it for 2 hours a day for 2 weeks. (If you can’t do 2 hours, start small. Just do 15 minutes a day and ratchet it up to 30 the next week and keep adding more time over the weeks.) Topics of study would be like: gesture, anatomy, eyes, hands, perspective, color, light and shadow, hair, etc… (Videos: watch this video by Xia Taptara, he’s a concept artist and this guy knows what he’s talking about.)
  • Do gesture drawings in the beginning to get used to drawing the human form and learn the correct proportions of the body – learn the size of the head+torso relative to legs, size of arms, etc. I still suffer with this sometimes. (Video tutorials: Proko and also REIQ have great videos, check out their channels!)
  • When drawing the figure, always draw all the features. – I mostly avoided hands and feet when doing gesture/figure drawing and now my hands and feet are pretty shitty. Don’t be dumb like me.
  • Draw lots of profiles from reference – You do this to learn how the human face and features look from different angles (I did this but I didn’t do it NEARLY enough as I should have). You have to know how to draw the face and its features from any angle.
  • Learn Perspective – I avoided perspective for almost a whole year because it looked scary, it’s actually pretty easy. Again, don’t be me please. (Videos: there are tons of great perspective videos and books out there. ORIANART has the best class I’ve seen about perspective although you have to pay for it. It’s worth the price, he explained perspective to me in a simple way that no one else could. Everyone else over complicates perspective. -_-)
  • Learn Light and Shadow basics – You can’t color pictures without understanding how light and shadows work. (Videos: again check youtube as there are tons of videos explaining light and shadow. I personally use ctrlpaint.com, lots of great videos to learn from there.)

TLDR: For your first year focus almost exclusively on figure drawing, faces, and a little bit of hair study wouldn’t hurt either. Once you feel comfortable drawing the human figure then branch out and learn light and shadow then you can move on to color and learn perspective when you want to start making environments for your characters. Don’t even attempt to learn anatomy unless you are very confident in your figure drawing abilities. Learning anatomy at this stage is a waste of time. You will learn more about the human body simply by doing gesture drawings and life drawings.

**** P.S. I forgot to mention this list is for people who’s goal in art is to do amazing figure drawing. For my case, I wanna draw teh animay tiddiez and I wanna draw them asap! If your goal is to be an environmental artist then I would say learn perspective first! Then move onto light and shadow, then learn color when you understand light. Then you can go paint your trees or whatever…

I’m separating these next two as they are infinitely more important than the others…

  • Draw doodles and random ideas in a sketchbook EVERY DAY. Just draw everyday. Doesn’t matter what. Just draw something. This is the top tier advice I would give to all beginner artists. Just draw every day for like 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, whatever you can manage. This is NON-NEGOTIABLE.

In fact, you could probably disregard this whole list and just do this one thing and you will still be ahead of me today.

Allow me to give you the sciencey reason for this.

By drawing everyday (even if it’s just doodles or shitty art) you are making a cluster of neurons (devoted to art) in your brain stronger. The only difference between you, the fledgling artist, and a professional is that the professional artist has the equivalent of a god damn AI construct in their brain who’s sole purpose is to create art. The only way to create this Art Construct in your brain is to feed it everyday. It’s like a demon that grows in your brain the more you do art, and everyday you spend on art makes it stronger. If all this sounds like voodoo bullshit to you, go read Mastery by Robert Greene (That book should be required reading for anyone trying to master a skill).
  • Draw what you want to draw, even if you don’t know how to draw it correctly.
If you wanna draw anime tiddiez, then draw anime tiddiez. Yes, even if you have no idea how to. It will be horrible and painful, believe me. But realize you will never learn how to do anything in life unless you fail miserably at it at first. Just like when you learned how to ride a bike (do kids still do that these days?) you fell and scraped your knees. When you first start drawing a new subject in art you will fail horribly at it. No one started out as an anime titty master. NO ONE. You are human, and humans are imperfect and riddled with errors. You are not perfect, get rid of this mentality. It all comes down to losing your ego (I’m going to write an article about this).

Okay, welp I think that about does it partner. Hopefully I imparted some wisdom to another artist who’s unsure what path to take when teaching yourself art. And if worst comes to worse at least this article will serve as a milestone so in the future people can see my humble beginnings. 🙂

Good luck fellow wanderer!

Haven’t posted any of my finished pictures in quite a while. I’ve been mostly doing lots of studies and finally forcing myself to learn perspective. 😛 Besides that not much goin’ on. Lately I’ve come up with this idea of forcing myself to finish a picture (relatively) quickly. I get bogged down because of my perfectionism trying to make every little detail perfect, which drags the picture out of a week or 2 and then I lose momentum and get bored with the picture and struggle to finish it. So now I’m trying to work on a picture about an hour or two a day and it worked out really well for me on this picture. I still noticed a bunch of errors the next day after finishing but whatevs! I need to be focusing more on just simply drawing every day and I will get better with time.

It’s been a struggle to get down the draw everyday habit, but I think I finally see light at the end of the tunnel. 😀

Not So Weekly, Mostly Kinda Sorta Monthly Links #3

January 1, 2018 By JONRS Leave a Comment

Blah blah blah, past story of my life in December or something…

(I said I was only going to write one small section of this post and do the rest later, but holy shit, once I started writing, I god damn started writing! I’m always lazy and put these posts off, but when I sit down and write them, I get enthralled by the writing process. I think that means I’m a natural writer? Or it’s cause I’m extremely high in trait openness which basically means I’m demon possessed and my muse constantly bombards me with ideas. I noticed that when I started writing, my writing was very terse but then as I got warmed up, it dragged on and I used caps more, heh.)

I also renamed these posts to just “Weekly Links” instead of “Weekly Link Roundup”. That “roundup” part is just too damn cowboyish for me and I ain’t bout that life partner, ya hear? Shooooooot…

Oh, also Happy New Year to the 5 people who will read this! 😀

(Oh, and also ALSO, I changed the image for the weekly posts to some sketches I did recently (*looks at date* Shiiiiiiiit! I’ve drawn so much since then, fuck). I got tired of the pretty business lady, I wanna redo her in the future in a different pose. Maybe I’ll just put sketches on the article picture instead from now on, I don’t know, we’ll see.)

Art References

Micheline Pitt  –  Gorgeous pinup model. She’s got her own clothing line as well.

Dolly Castro  –  Thick Nicaraguan lady (swear to god, she looks latina to me. Don’t matter, she still thick tho x_x)

Kina Shen  –  Another IRL loli. She’s like Uma Thuman’s little sister in Pulp Fiction or something. Or a living doll? ttl qt.

ahsy_u  –  Another Korean makeup artist, like no way. Guess they’re a dime a dozen in Korea? Maybe I’m just seriously disconnected from women’s interests? She’s pretty and that’s all that matters. (She has a youtube channel with lots of makeup tutorials)

Roseha  –  Korean makeup artist (I want you to know that I’m not biased towards asian women whatsoever, it’s just coincidence). Her makeup choice says: “I have problems”. As the great Patrice O’Neal would say: Delicious. Also wtf, does she have a lazy eye or is it just me? I can’t unsee her potentially lazy eye, god damn it. (Youtube channel with lots of makeup tutorials also)

Guy Tang  –  Hot asian professional hairstylist dude in Hollywood. Holy shit, this guy has a lot of hair tutorials on his youtube channel. Check out his instagram for some awesome pics of hair he’s done. Women would kill to look as good as this man hahahaha.

Ms. Monica  –  HO HO, SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST! Beautiful Latina lady who’s all about that fashion. I swear, most women can’t do fashion to save their lives, BUT THIS CHICK GETS IT.

Styleonme.com  –  JUST KIDDING. Hehe, almost forgot about this one… I FINALLY FOUND IT. I always see these gorgeous Korean fashion models on Pinterest and wondered where the hell these pictures came from. Lots of well dressed Korean women on this women’s fashion store (God help us.  x_x). These dang guys pretty much do a full photo shoot (FRONT AND BACK, WOO!) on each piece of clothing they sell. They’re practically doing our job for us!

Artists

Liang Xing  –  Awesome Chinese artist that does a lot of LoL and Overwatch art. He makes his girls sometimes a little too shiny and it’s a little off putting to me, but damn he’s really good regardless (and way fucking better than me :P).

Achibner  –  American artist that mostly does pinup art. Holy shit, this guy is fucking good. His skin rendering is fucking phenomenal!

cutesexyrobutts  –  Artist that specializes in making maximum thicc hunniez. He’s only been doing art for like 2 years, and damn he’s pretty good so far. It’s artists like this guy that whip me into shape when I’m feeling lazy.

ataruman  –  Japanese artist that mostly does lolis and other cute anime characters. I found him thanks to this adorable Diva he did.

Tips for Music Producers

Pogo released a video talking about tips for producing music. I watched it last month, and honestly I don’t really remember what he said in the video, BUT I do remember it sounded good at the time! And it’s Pogo, come on, the guy’s great. We could probably translate some of his tips into our art world, and if you’re a musician then you should definitely listen to the guys advice. (Yes, I love Pogo and I’m biased, that’s why this is here.)

Jordan Peterson with Stefan Molyneux again!

Jordan had a talk with Stefan Molyneux for Christmas and it’s amazing! They talked about more archetypal stuff in the bible, the utility of forgiveness, analyzing the rituals/meanings behind Christmas, why Tinder is bad (didn’t even know, but dang, sounds bad to me), and other interesting things. I wish these 2 could have a monthly show or something, as Stefan is one of those rare dudes that know’s what Jordan is talking about and can bounce ideas off him.

Music

Man, I was going to make it a rule to only post like 4 songs per post, but I can’t fucking do it. There’s just too many good songs I found this past month and if there’s someone else out there that loves house like me and doesn’t know these songs exist, well I just can’t let that happen. Not in my reality! And not if I can do something about it! If you love house, then you will love these songs.

Once Bitten – Dream  – Amazing track (I’m probably going to say that about each of these :X). Reminds me of old school Daft Punk or something. Just really gets you in a trance with those beats, and those uh synths? I don’t know what that sound would be called but it sounds amazing.

Moff & Tarkin – Young Val Kilmer  –  Oooo man, the vocal sample they used on this song… Just absolutely incredible. Such a dreamy song… ^_^

Dannii Minogue – Baby Love (Silky 70’s Mix)  –  Mallgrab. All I gotta say is, Mallgrab. That dang guy played this in a set I heard recently and damn. Didn’t know such a gem existed. This one is more disco than house but I don’t care, still amazing.

Bootie Grove – Da Funky Feeling  – Another gem of a song that’s almost more disco than anything. Phew, that chorus though. It’s songs like this I search high and low for.

Mucity – Reason (Nikita Villeneuve Remix)  –  Kinda has a downer vibe to it. Or maybe a bittersweet vibe rather? Still, amazing track regardless and really just makes you want to move. Love it. ^_^

Darren Styles – Cruising (Beachball 06)  –  Okay, I lied. This is definitely not house. This is an old happy hardcore song I used to listen to like 5 years ago and I had to listen to it again for nostalgia’s sake. It’s such a beautiful song, very uplifting.

Monolithic – ’96 Cavalier  –  Last one, I swear! Woah. Another song that just speaks deep into my soul or something. I think it’s the vocals again. I’m just a sucker for chopped up female vocals in a house track. It’s like an instant recipe for awesome house: dem beats + chopped up female vocals = good song. I gotta keep my eye on this guy, he’s relatively new to the house scene I guess and fuck, he’s doing work!

Laying Girl

December 2, 2017 By JONRS Leave a Comment

Laying Girl  –  #375 / 12.2.17

I talked a little bit last time about how I “gave up on art”. I didn’t really, just replaced my priority with streaming instead. I had a realization that streaming should be my priority in life. The reason being that my entire life, I’ve been playing video games and working with computers. My skillset is basically tooled for doing computer/video game related stuff. By making art my priority I was basically resetting my life’s work and starting from scratch. I also (thanks to my perfectionist nature) was pushing myself way too hard on art.

TLDR: I’m still doing art, but wayyyyyy more casually. I was pushing myself to study and learn way too fucking hard. Honestly, I could do it too, but I would have to give up gaming as it’s too much of a distraction for art.

It’s funny because as soon as I decided to do this, the art demons got a hold of me and I started sketching all kinds of stuff. Probably my subconscious is trying to steer me towards the stuff I actually want to draw and not homework. We’ll see where this takes me. I’m going to give it a month and then go from there.

Weekly (pfft, more like monthly) Link Round Up – #2

December 2, 2017 By JONRS Leave a Comment

Phew, where to start? November has been crazy for me: hurt my ear and was in excruciating pain for several days, replaced my main priority of art with streaming instead, got re-addicted to guild wars 2 for the Nth time, got possessed by the art demons even more so after giving up on them. Hmm, I think that about covers it? Been neglecting my site for some time and I’m just here showing it some love. I didn’t have enough links to do a weekly round up after the first week, so I kinda sorta got lazy, and here we are a month later! Anyways lets start with art stuff!

Art References

EXES Lingerie  –  An etsy store that sells interesting designs of lingerie. Really shiny/flashy designs and yes they have thick models.

Girls Chick  –  Brazilian clothing company, stylish designs with thick latin models.  😛

Fashion Model Directory  –  Site that has a ton of (European?) models on it. Lots of ladies with beautiful faces on here. They are skinny as hell though, sadness. 🙁  Look, you come here for the beautiful face refs okay?

Anzu Jaamu  –  CUTE AS FUCK, IRL Loli. I’ve never been a fan of lolis, but in real life I just might be… She wears hella-hella make up, but god damn is she fucking cute. Perfect face refs.

PONY  –  Korean chick that does makeup tutorials. This chick knows how to transform herself into an asian goddess. x_x  It’s women like this that make me wanna give up non-asian girls forever.

Vintage Vandal  –  Thick pin up model. Sometimes she looks like an Egyptian. Do I need to say anything else?

Cara (Delia) Rose  –  British model with incredible tits. One of those chicks with thick sexy lips + tits. God help us, a dangerous combo. But god damn hahah sometimes her lipstick makes her lips look fake or like a duck. XD

Random Art Stuff

Zebra Delguard Mechanical Pencil  –  I just picked one of these babies up cause I needed a new .5 mechanical pencil. Oh muh gah, it is fucking sexy as hell. It looks like a god damn medical syringe or something, heh. They have lots of other sweet colors too, cheap too.

21yc  –  This dood is a Chinese freelance artist, omg. This guy is damn good! He does a lot of WoW fan art, check him out.

Music

Yamajet  –  Happy, upbeat, house music. This guy is one of my favorite artists (besides Sussie 4). He makes music for video games and his own stuff on the side too.

Persona 5 OST  –  Official sound track for Persona 5. Absolutely incredible. Some jazzy songs, some Santana-esque riffs. If you haven’t listened to Shoji Meguro’s work, check out Persona 3 and 4’s soundtracks. They are just like this, a blend of jazz-pop-rock-house. Amazing.

Dark City OST  –  Sway  –  I finally watched Dark City last week and it was pretty cool. I loved the noir style of the movie! Most of the soundtrack is dark, dramatic music. But there are two really awesome sultry sounding bar songs.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game OST  –  Soundtrack for the Xbox live arcade game. This game was an amazing beat-em-up with a fucking awesome 8-bit style soundtrack by Anamanaguchi.

Human Nature Will Never Change

Wall Street Playboys released an article a while back that pretty much summarizes people’s negative qualities. Some people will probably see the article as negative, but I see it as that’s just how life/people are. A lot of people are going to waste your time/their own time in life, and it helps to know how to work with people.

12 Rules for Life

Dave Rubin had Jordan Peterson on his show again! This time they’re talking about Dr. Peterson’s new book “12 Rules For Life: An Antidote To Chaos”. This is an excellent interview covering a range of great rules about life. To me, the child raising advice seemed to stick out the most, because that’s what people need to be hearing these days. Jordan’s new book is available for pre-order on Amazon already.

RPG Names

20000-names.com  –  This here is a great website to look up names. I use this website all the time to come up with names for characters in video games or RPG’s.

Streaming Life

I read a old forum thread from the OBS forums that put to rest one of my questions about capture cards. Apparently capture cards and OBS use about the same amount of processing power, so there’s no point in investing in a capture card, unless you’re doing console streaming.

Musashi’s 21 Rules

I found an old article of Victor’s about Musashi’s “Dokkodo”. He puts a modern day filter on Musashi’s rules that really resonated with me. Check it out if these ancient philosophies interest you. I also looked up another guy’s translations of the Dokkodo to get some another point of view. This website has a lot of context on the Dokkodo and helped me to put it in a different light than Victor did. Read em both and decide which speaks to you more.
